Self-Stirring Mug

Anyone who has ever enjoyed a steaming cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day can relate to the frustration of getting to the last drop and finding all of the delicious chocolate sitting in a saturated clump on the bottom of their mug. Or maybe you prefer a cup of hot tea with honey and haven't quite figured out how to get the honey sufficiently mixed. The Self-Stirring Mug is the solution to all of your hot beverage predicaments. This handy table-top gadget is great for preventing chocolate build-up at the end of your hot chocolate or for keeping sugar or honey dispersed in your coffee or tea. The Self-Stirring Mug contains a very small propeller at the bottom that will spin at 3,000 rpms by simply touching the handle. You can keep your drink well-mixed and not have to hassle with stirrers or dirty spoons littering you desk top. Anytime the taste your drink seems diluted, simply give the touch and the mug will stir it up again. The Self-Stirring mug also includes with a lid so you won't find your beverage swirling out the sides. The lid also keeps your hot drink from cooling off to quickly, and when you need a coaster, simply pop the lid off and place it under the mug. Made of lightweight injection-molded plastic inside a layer of stainless steel, the Self-Stirring mug would make a great gift for anyone in your home or office.

20q - Pocket Mind Reader plays 20 questions

Give the gift that reads people's minds! A game that can tell what you are thinking in 20 questions or less, and which provides hours of fun as you try to stump the machine. Can it be done? Of course it can! Is it easy to do? Try for yourself and find out if you can stump this handheld version of the 20 questions game.

The online network that hosts one version of the game is immense, with each game played adding to the sophistication of the AI that guesses. The handheld version doesn't, unfortunately, get these frequent updates, but it does provide hours of stimulating fun as you try to stump the pocket sized device with new items to guess.

Answer honestly, and you will find that the 20 questions handheld game guesses what you've got on your mind more times than not. This machine is not un-stumpable, but there are few items, it seems, that are not hidden away in that computer brain just waiting to be guessed.

The game was created by Robin Burgener, who started work on the project in 1988. The game works like the human brain, forming a neural network that is built from connections like our synapses, helping the game determine what to ask next and what to guess at the end. Play for yourself and see how a string of seemingly unrelated questions can come together in a way that allows the game to guess what was on your mind.

If you love the game of 20 questions, and have played it until your family and friends are fed up with it, then the handheld version is for you. Take it just about anywhere, simply slipping it into your pocket and pulling it out whenever you are ready for a new round. The game can usually guess what's on your mind in 20 minutes or so, leaving you baffled and determined to stump it.

Peddle YoGen MaxT to keep your laptop alive

Earlier on we noticed that alternative energy source battery chargers are steadily gaining their popularity. Under alternative energy source battery chargers I mean of course those which use any energy source except for the one coming from the plug. Hence the most popular sources are wind power and solar power. Mechanical (kinetic) power is a bit less popular in portable gadgets but is used widely in modern-day hybrid vehicles. However wind and solar power sound odd in winter so Easy Energy decided to step in with a kinetic power charger. They call it YoGen MaxT and it is up to charge your notebook for a period limited only by your personal physical abilities.

Well actually even when the foot needs some rest, YoGen MaxT can help it with some rest. The paddle it has charges AA batteries, and they in turn power the notebook so it doesn't shut down as soon as the paddle stops. Easy Energy has its proprietary chargers which are very thin. On the picture their cover is seen as two jutting out parts at the both sides of the foot. Underneath the foot there is a tunable high ratio micro-transmission device. The tuning range of power output it provides is a really good thing to have if you are using different electronic gadgets and each requires its specific power input.

The YoGen MaxT folds in a handy box and will not be abusive in a trip even in a short one. In a folded form its dimensions are 170 x 184 x 49 mm. The width and height increase little bit when YoGen MaxT is set to work. Also the number of AA batteries is optional - up 12 of them and in standard it has a number of adapters for the plug and a battery indicator.

It really seems to me that YoGen MaxT is a quality product and as a portable charger will be great at least until it is worm enough for solar chargers. But also it might look hilarious to peddle the box on public and in a video Easy Energy has presented, YoGen MaxT is clattering loud which sure is not good. Such a way then its future will be defined by its price.

iPod finally in bath on The MP3 Mirror

Music, thanks to lots of modern-day portable MP3 players, can stay with us wherever we go and as far as we go from our home PCs. However there are still places unreachable for digital music and they are closer than you might have imagined. The territory of our baths, where all the electronic gadgets and gizmos are banned, is at the same time exactly the place where we want them to be. Long and boring minutes while staying in the bath are best for watching TV or listing to the music. But waterproof TV will cost a fortune, so here is a way out as Antonio Lupi sees it. This is a mirror, equipped with an iPod. Finally, we can use it safely in the bath!

This gadget came out from AL studio labs and is called The MP3 Mirror. But don't be fooled. They haven't designed a mirror, they have designed a waterproof dock for your iPod. It is made from steel and keeps all the electronic and potentially dangerous parts inside. Such a way, and this is the best of what I like in The MP3 Mirror, is that it can be attached to any mirror and you don't have to change it. Also, iPod will be perfectly seen in it in the dark - lighted by a Touch Led. No info on price but once again should be cheaper than a TV.

Very efficient Sharp Aquos D Series

TV is a sort of gadget that will not loose a piece of its popularity until something better is invented. It is mostly entertaining and hardly ever particularly useful, but we can't just say "no" to it. This is how an ordinary TV becomes a great thing for environmentalists to worry about. But usually they don’t manage to do it faster then developers do because saying about a TV: "This one is environmentally friendly", they guarantee themselves good sales. The latest "green" LCDs now are Sharp Aquos D series models, but as we think, they are not cutting edge, they are too late I'm afraid.

Sharp will let Aquos D models flow in the Japanese market on February 20th. There will be three of them differing mostly by their size: 32" for 1556 USD, 26" for 1230 USD and 20" for 1007 USD. The 32 inch model has better contrast ratio - 3000 : 1, and the other two models both have 1500 : 1. The part of Sharp's work on new Aquos D models that viewer will actually see is also 1366 x 768 resolution, 450 cd/m2 luminance, HD quality, and so on, and so, on. But the main part of Aquos D, the side that developers are showing off, is hidden behind the screen and shall never be seen until you look at how much you have to pay for electricity this month. Aquos D will save you more that 50 percents of average expanses on the same-sized LCD. This is not only economical, but green because it doesn't use that much electricity born in difficult labor. And the plastic is also less damaging when recycled.

However, even though no one can deny a huge work made by Sharp, they didn't beat OLED technology because they didn't have a chance. They got close to it with efficiency measures, but are far away with performance. It is clear now that OLED is the future by any standards, why then to go much further with LCD?

Build and Design

Dell has successfully managed to turn around its corporate image over the last year or two. During the first half of this decade most consumers criticized Dell for making heavy, thick, and boxy laptops that offered great value but where short on style. While Dell sales floundered several companies like HP, Apple, and Sony made significant market gains by developing sleek notebooks that offered a more "personalized" appearance. Dell started to change all that in late 2007 with the XPS M1330 followed by more attractive notebooks in the XPS, Inspiron and Studio notebook lines. Following the huge success of the XPS line, Dell is now making the XPS brand a "modifier" for all their notebooks. In other words, you could buy a nice Studio 15 notebook or get better performance, superior build quality and more style with the new Studio XPS 16.

The first time you look at the Studio XPS 16 it's clear that this is something entirely new for Dell. They've taken the sleek lines and brushed aluminum accents from the XPS line and combined it with the multimedia features and a few chassis design elements from the Studio line to create a solid desktop replacement. I use the term "desktop replacement" because most people in the market for a 16-inch notebook aren't planning to haul their notebook everywhere and use it during regular airline travel.

What the Studio XPS 16 lacks in mobility it more than makes up for in solid design and construction. As mentioned above, the Studio XPS 16 takes several design elements from the latest XPS notebooks: the wedge-shaped profile, drop hinge, slot-loading optical drive, and touch-sensitive media buttons are all hallmarks of the XPS M1330 and M1530. That said, there's more to the Studio XPS 16 than just design elements from other Dell notebooks.

Another nice touch is the use of leather on the lid over the hinge area. We've seen leather-wrapped notebooks before, but this subtle use of leather looks a little more appealing and might even be practical. Since many people carry their laptops in their hand with the hinges pointed down this leather area provides a soft, textured surface for you to hold and keep a tight grip on your notebook.

In terms of overall chassis construction the Studio XPS 16 is quite solid and suffers from virtually no flex or creaks when squeezed and twisted between your hands. Construction is mostly magnesium alloy and some plastic with brushed aluminum accents around the hinges and the outer edge of the notebook. The Studio XPS 16 isn't quite as rugged as the Dell Latitude or Precision business notebooks but it should survive a drop from your desk without significant damage.

The one design element I have mixed feelings about is the bottom access panel. Rather than have the typical RAM cover, hard drive cover, and main panel on the bottom of the notebook, the Studio XPS 16 uses a single, massive panel that provides access to all of the notebook at once. While this is helpful for those people who want to make multiple modifications or service their notebook it also means you have to remove 10 screws from the bottom of the notebook just to upgrade the RAM.

Screen

The 16.0" 1080p Full HD RGBLED display is, in a word, gorgeous. Unlike standard LCD technology used in most notebooks, the RGBLED LCD offers richer, deeper colors and excellent contrast that make it ideal for watching HD movies from the built-in Blu-ray player or for editing high-resolution photos from your digital camera.

The 1920 x 1080 screen on our review unit looks beautiful from straight on and has fantastic horizontal viewing angles so you can easily watch a Blu-ray movie with three or more of your friends sitting around you. Backlighting was mostly even across the surface of the screen in our review unit. Upper vertical viewing angles are good, but colors did begin to invert at lower viewing angles when the screen is tilted back. That said, unless you plan to view your laptop's screen from the floor looking up this won't be a problem.

What might be a problem is the fact that Dell only offers the Studio XPS 16 with a "frameless" glossy display ... the type that uses a separate glossy protective layer in front of the actual display panel. This gives the screen a very modern look, but the trade-off is a signficant amount of reflections on the surface of the screen under strong indoor lights. Outdoors under direct sunlight the screen reflections are so strong it can be extremely difficult to see anything on the screen.

If you keep your office lights dim or live in your parents' basement with the lights turned off this won't be a problem.

Keyboard, Touchpad and Media Controls

The keyboard on the Studio XPS 16 is one of the nicer keyboards I've used on a desktop replacement notebook. The keyboard is firm with only a minor bit of flex detected near the "Enter" key. All the keys have excellent travel and cushion. Unlike the Studio 17, which featured a dedicated number pad, the fullsize keyboard on the Studio XPS 16 looks smaller than it actually is thanks to the massive speaker grills located on either size of the keyboard (more on that later). The only complaint some may have is that the keys are "flatter" than the ones used on other Dell notebooks, so touch typists might have a learning curve when using this notebook. The keyboard also features a nice white LED backlight function when you're typing in the dark.

The Synatics touchpad works well enough, though it seems a little on the small side given the size of the notebook. The mouse buttons have excellent travel and cushion when pressed. The good news with the touchpad is that it's responsive, has dedicated scroll areas and the glossy textured feel is extremely good.

A series of touch-sensitive media buttons with white LED backlights are located above the keyboard similar to the buttons on the Dell Studio 17. The media button LEDs stay lit constantly rather than turning off after a fraction of a second, so they might distract you and reduce battery life by staying lit all the time.

Performance and Benchmarks

At the end of the day the most important parts of a laptop are the internal components that do all the work. Our review unit came equipped with the Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor (2.4GHz) which offers excellent performance in terms of number crunching and video encoding. The 4GB of DDR3 system RAM is enough to satisfy Vista and still provide enough RAM for most needs. The 320GB Seagate Momentus 7200.3 hard disk drive (HDD) in our review unit offers good reliability and excellent performance.

The Studio XPS 16 comes with a significant amount of software pre-installed that could be called bloatware. The numerous proprietary Dell applications and security software tends to slow the system down during the initial startup and sometimes makes life a little more complicated if you're used to managing your power or wireless settings within Windows and a Dell program overrides your changes.

The ATI Radeon HD 3670 dedicated graphics card provides enough power for just about any gaming or 3D graphics work, so everyone from average users to hardcore gamers should have something to like here. The synthetic benchmarks listed below will give you some idea of how this system performs compared to other systems on the market.

Getting On The Blackberry Bandwagon

SMS may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a little something called email.

Mobile email seems to be all the rage these days, with more and more people opting for QWERTY endowed devices over those of the traditional kind. But what is it about these devices that make them any different from their numpad brethren?

My first taste of QWERTYbility this year came in the form of the Sony X1 Xperia (sorry, I know I still owe you guys the review!), but unlike my friends who were enjoying the QWERTY life in Symbian, I had to endure the never ending pain that is Windows Mobile.

Suffice to say, I didn't like it.

I decided that if I wanted to be a real QWERTY convert then I had to do it the right way. The PR rep for BlackBerry (thanks Simon!) soon got in touch with me and agreed to loan me two BlackBerrys - the Bold and the Pearl Flip.

Would this be a path to my destruction? Would I get hooked on the sweet temptations that the CrackBlackBerry offered?

Well, I don't know. Frankly, I can't say just yet. It's only been two days, but already I'm getting jumpy whenever I see a red LED flash near me, I get anxious if I don't receive any emails for more than two hours, and I'm desperately hooked on the simple but addictive poker game.

Yet, it's all too early to tell how my second meeting of the QWERTY kind this year will end.

Stay tuned for my full report!

Nvidia GTX 295 Review

Introduction:

Are you looking for the the best performing video card that money can buy? Maybe you are looking for this card for the simple fact that you want to get some great frame rates for your favorite games or you are just trying to get some of the best benchmarking scores out there to gain some bragging rights; Nvidia may just have the right product for you with the release of their newest card, the GTX 295. Well, I am very interested in seeing exactly how well this card is going to be able to perform when it is compared to the other cards that are out on the market.
Closer Look:

The Nvidia GTX 295 is a very large looking black card, with a very distinctive design on its outer casing to make it stand out from the other cards that it will likely be compared to. At the top of the card is where you will find the SLI connectors to allow for more than just one monster card to be utilized and make your system fly as fast as possible. The bottom of the card is where the PCI-E connector is located to install the card. The front of the Nvidia GTX 295 is where you are going to find the two DVI ports for connection to your monitor; there is also a HDMI port that allows you to install your TV and turn your rig into a HTPC.

Sony P-series Lifestyle PC

Product summary

The goodThe good: Elegant, thin design; large keyboard; multiple networking and connectivity options; high-resolution screen; less expensive than Sony's UMPC experiments.

The badThe bad: Stuck with Windows Vista (for now); trackpoint navigation isn't ideal.

The bottom lineThe bottom line: Sony's upscale Atom-powered Lifestyle PC has the components of a cheaper machine but the design of a more expensive one. The end result will be a useful travel PC for some and a conversation piece for others.

Sony likes to keep its Vaio products aimed at mid-to-high-end buyers--much like Apple does--and generally eschews the budget end of the market (although there are a handful of less expensive Vaios we've reviewed favorably).

When it comes to Intel-Atom-powered systems, it's no different; Sony's entry into the very hot minilaptop category shares a lot with Netbooks such as the Dell Mini 9 or Asus Eee PC, but clearly goes out of its way to avoid being lumped in with them (Sony doesn't even call the P-series a Netbook).

Even with a wide-screen, 8-inch, 1,600x768-resolution display and reasonably usable full keyboard, the $1,199 P-series Lifestyle PC fits into roughly the same footprint as a standard white business envelope, and is less than 1 inch thick. That makes it both an impressive engineering feat, as well as a system that will work best for a highly specific group of users. While it can be a useful travel PC for those most concerned with size and weight, casual users may be put off by the tiny trackpoint navigation and bloated Windows Vista operating system. That said, next to the new MacBook, we've rarely had a laptop with more gawkers dropping by the CNET Labs to eyeball it.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Review

In a nutshell: Nokia's first touchscreen phone is impressively good. It may not have quite the polished feel of the iPhone, but with so many good features, it's in many ways better than the iPhone. Headline features include the very high resolution touchscreen with 16 million colours, the 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, 3G video calling, an excellent web browser with support for Flash, the music player & FM radio, GPS positioning with Nokia Maps, WiFi, Bluetooth and an 8GB memory card. Available in black, red or blue.

Review: February 2009.

We've waited a heck of a long time for Nokia to catch up with Apple, LG and Samsung and launch a touchscreen phone. And here it is at last! It's a 3G smartphone, and belongs to Nokia's XpressMusic range.

At first glance, it looks like it was worth the wait. It's a very stylish handset. All touchscreen phones tend to look pretty much the same to be honest. What distinguishes the 5800 is its sleekness: it's much narrower than the iPhone 3G, in fact with a width of 52mm, it's probably the narrowest touchscreen phone around. This means that you can easily operate it with one hand. It has a lovely big screen too, with a very high resolution (640 x 360 pixels), which helps to make the user interface easier to use. The device has a wide range of input options: finger touch, stylus and plectrum with a virtual alphanumeric keypad, full and mini QWERTY keyboards and handwriting recognition. The display will rotate automatically when you turn the phone to landscape mode. Normally the XpressMusic phones have dedicated buttons for music, and the 5800 has a dedicated virtual media bar for quick access to music controls, as well as functions like the gallery and web browser. There are also physical keys for power, send and end, menu, screen lock and volume. The big question is: "Is the touchscreen on the 5800 as good as the iPhone?" Sadly, no. But it isn't at all bad. It's just that you need to use the stylus sometimes and the whole experience isn't quite so much fun. But stick with the review, because the 5800 has a lot going for it, and beats the iPhone in a number of departments.

The 5800 has a proper camera for a start. At 3.2 megapixels it isn't the best camera phone by a long way, but it uses Carl Zeiss optics, has autofocus and a double LED flash and leaves the iPhone standing. It also has a high quality video camera, which can record at up to 640 x 480 pixels and at 30 frames per second, with stereo sound. A front-mounted video camera enables you to make video calls on a 3G network.

The music player in the 5800 is excellent too. We found the touchscreen controls to be very easy here, and all the features that you'd hope for are here, including an 8-band graphic equaliser and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone is supplied with an 8GB memory card, which can store up to 2,000 MP3 tracks (or 4,000 in AAC format), and if your music collection grows even bigger, you can upgrade this to a massive 16GB. The Comes With Music feature gives you unlimited music downloads for a whole year! There's also a built-in FM radio. No complaints for music then.

The 5800's big touchscreen is ideal for web browsing. With very fast download speeds thanks to the 3G HSDPA implementation and a quality web browser, there's nothing to hold you back. The 5800 beats the iPhone here too, with support for Flash meaning that you can watch videos from YouTube and other sites on your phone. The phone is also WiFi compatible, so you can get super fast data transfer speeds in the vicinity of a WLAN network or a WiFi Hotspot.

GPS is included too, together with Nokia Maps. As well as 3G and WiFi, the connectivity options include Bluetooth and USB, plus a TV-Out connection (cable supplied.)

The 5800 XpressMusic is a Series 60 phone, and potentially there are going to be a lot of third-party apps available for downloading too. You get a couple of games and the standard Series 60 organiser applications with the phone, including document browsers and a good organiser.

Finally, we want to mention that the battery life is very good. Phones like this do tend to get used rather a lot, and big screens are hungry for power, but the battery capacity seems to be up to the job.

The sales package is generous, including all the cables you'll need, a stereo headphone, an 8GB memory card, a case, a stand and a stylus. The phone is available in black, red and blue too.

We weren't sure what to expect from Nokia's first touchscreen phone. It's obviously spent a lot of time in the design studio, and it looks like Nokia wisely resisted the temptation to rush something out. The 5800 no doubt has the occasional bug (all smart phones do), but these are few and will probably be ironed out pretty quickly with firmware updates. The 5800 XpressMusic manages to combine the benefits of touchscreen, without many downsides, and avoids being just another iPhone clone thanks to Nokia's attention to detail. It may not be perfect, but we're impressed by just how good it is, and it would be churlish to award anything less than 5 stars.

Samsung T219

The Good: The Samsung SGH-T219 is a lower model in the Samsung range geared towards business users. It features support for multimedia messaging and has a 500 contact storage capacity with its ample internal memory.

The Bad: Due to this phone being aimed at business users, it does not feature a camera to comply with the more and more businesses prohibiting camera phones in the workplace. The display is generally clear, although does become difficult to read in direct sunlight. Call quality is adequate; however there is some echo and distortion when using both the earpiece and speakerphone.

The Bottom Line: Whereas the red colour may be eye catching and make the phone stand out aesthetically, the basic feature set and poor call quality don’t really impress that much.
